Vikings were an amazing Norse culture.  While the houses they built in Europe often looked like the one in this picture, when the Vikings reached Canada they adopted a more practical arctic house style like that found at the Lance Aux Meadows site in Newfoundland, partly subterranean and covered with earth to keep the heat in on long arctic nights.
