line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">     <\/span>The photograph on the wall of the den shows a buffalo calf with wide sparkling eyes looking straight into the camera.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Her face is luminous, as though the light emanates from inside her, rather than pouring down from the sunny sky.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Over the past decade we have raised six orphaned or abandoned calves, but Slipper was different.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Her story is one of those heavenly tales, out of time, beyond space, more profound than love or sorrow.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We found Slipper lying alone in the soft hay by the feeder.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">   <\/span>We don\u2019t know how long she\u2019d been there, but she appeared to be one day old.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>As anyone who has ever tried to catch a soon-to-be \u201cbottle baby\u201d knows, it\u2019s ordinarily a real chore, involving great stealth, bursts of speed, and wild leaps to grab a leg.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>We were surprised, then, when she let us walk to within five feet of her before she stood up.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">     <\/span>And then we understood. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">     <\/span>Our other \u201cbottle babies\u201d had been simple cases.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Two were orphaned when their mothers were struck by lightning; one cow was apparently shoved off a cliff in a particularly violent thunderstorm, leaving us her two-day old daughter; two calves came from first-time mothers who just walked away from their babies and never came back.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">     <\/span>As we approached Slipper, she struggled to get on her feet, and we saw that she had a twisted right front leg.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Two days later the vet would say, \u201cOh, that\u2019s not bad!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>It\u2019ll straighten out!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>What none of us knew, of course, was that Slipper\u2019s weak leg had prevented her from getting up to nurse after she was born.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>We all know what happens to calves that don\u2019t get colostrum (mother\u2019s \u201cfirst\u201d milk that kicks on the immune system,) within the first few hours of birth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>What\u2019s different about Slipper\u2019s story is that it\u2019s not about death, it\u2019s about five days of extraordinary <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">life<\/em>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">     <\/span>Since we did not know that Slipper was going to die, we treated her as though her leg would get better.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>We took her for long walks up the canyon and carried her home when her leg grew too weak to hold her.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>More than any of our other calves, she had an insatiable curiosity about the world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Most bottle babies are impatient.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Nothing is more <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">important than feeding time.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>But Slipper was often late for her feedings, not just because her leg prevented her from moving quickly, but because there was always one more grass stem that needed smelling, one more cottontail that required a solid appraisal. She loved everything alive. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">On the third day we took her bottle outside and called her.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>When she didn\u2019t come, we went looking for her.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>She was in the backyard staring raptly at a winding line of ants.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>She watched them for such a long time that we, too, knelt to see what was so fascinating.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Finally, after several minutes, she looked up, saw her bottle, and drank. Who can say what she found so interesting about the ants?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Maybe she knew she didn\u2019t have long to learn about this world and was trying to cram in each precious moment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>We suspect she believed that everything alive deserved lengthy consideration&#8211;simply because it was alive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As her health declined and she no longer had the strength to walk in the backyard, she spent her time lying on a soft rug outside the front door.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Watching her was a lesson in and of itself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>She seemed constantly aware of the growing pain inside her, but rather than turning away from life, she seemed to turn <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">to<\/em> it for solace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>When birds came to perch within a few feet of her, she watched them <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">with wide eyes, remaining so still and quiet that the birds often cocked their heads to study her, as though not certain she was alive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But she was.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>For another two days.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">  <\/span>Then she was gone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We buried her in the backyard beneath the cottonwood trees where she\u2019d stood for hours watching the leaf shadows dance when the wind blew the branches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Every time we pass her grave, we smile and remember what a Cherokee elder once told us: \u201cThe way to God is not through singing hymns or reading books, it\u2019s by giving life to those who need it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For five blessed days, Slipper gave us life in abundance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BUFFALO JOURNAL: SLIPPER By Kathleen O\u2019Neal Gear and W.
